In October of 2012, I decided to study Korea: my curiosity, the long lost memories, the Korean sentiment, how I am Korean, and how I am not Korean. I started a journal where I wrote exclusively in Korean. New connections were made, and what I thought was going to happen did not happen. Deep seeded experiences of gender and race floated to the top. And the content was negotiated through the study of the Korean language and Korean typography. I will share with you the process of what has happened so far.

Chris Ro is a designer and educator at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. Chris was a visiting designer at VCFA’s October 2014 residency where he and Yunim Kim did an amazing presentation about their observations about graphic design, Korea, and the liminality of aspects of culture. Much of this was culled from this amazing essay which Chris wrote a few years ago and which we are happy to share with you here.
