Join three design educators from across the country as they share their experiences in landing a design teaching job, preparing their curriculum, and working within design education. VCFA Graphic Design Alumnx Sonja Durr (’14), Lorilee Rager (’21), and Terrill Thomas (’14) will weigh on the best strategies for a career as a design educator.
Sonja Durr (2014) is a Senior Lecturer in Design at Eastern Washington University, teaching Typography, Global Histories of Design and Design for Social Change. Prior to joining EWU in 2016, Sonja taught at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle for two years. Lorilee Rager (2021) is founder of Thrive Creative Group, LLC, is a passionate designer and educator with a Master’s degree in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts. As an Assistant Professor at APSU, she combines her entrepreneurial experience as an agency owner with her deep understanding of the addicted artist, encouraging authenticity, mental wellness, and the balance between creative work and life. Her teaching emphasizes the responsibility designers have to engage with the world meaningfully while prioritizing their own well-being. Through her podcast, Ground and Gratitude, and her roles as a mother and mentor, Lorilee shares insights on aligning creative careers with personal fulfillment, making design a safe space for living a purposeful life. Terrill Thomas (2014) is an artist, designer, and educator who is passionate about developing experiences that cultivate community and creativity through collaborative experiences. This can be seen in the FAM nights at La Sierra, where students, alumni and friends come together to cook, share a meal and celebrate their creative work. He firmly believes that hiking and playing outside is a way to nurture one’s spirituality, which in turn regenerates our creative soul. Outside of the classroom, Thomas enjoys learning with his students how to garden, design murals, and various renovation projects.
