On June 8th, recent graduates from some of the most respected schools in the country gathered at the Tishman Auditorium in NYC for the AIGA’s Fresh Grads event. VCFA alumnus Todd Hilgert presented his thesis, “Gay and Tired,” integrating queerness into the heteronormative narratives of history and design.
Through the lens of queerness, Hilgert analyzes culture, art history, and the impact of identity on his own creative works.
Answering the question of “what is queer design?” reveals itself to be both an area of research rife with answers and a Sisyphean dilemma in defining something which staunchly opposes resolution. Queer design speaks to the non-normative and the rejected in an instinctual, shared vernacular that is in constant flux but reaches back through all human history.
