Design Nomadism: A possible future for design education
There is much hullabaloo in contemporary graphic design about new forms of practice. The rise of major corporate design teams, trends in more educated and involved clients, and design thinking tactics such as co-creation with users are a few effects of graphic design’s new forms.
At the same time, the way we educate graphic designers is being radically reshaped. Digital learning experiences, the democratization of online learning platforms, and big changes in instructional design due to technology’s rapid influence has design education seemingly a bit destabilized.
In a climate of radially changing practice, a broken apprenticeship model, and a do-it-yourself smorgasbord with gapping holes of knowledge what’s a contemporary design educator to do? I offer that we can embrace all this turbulent change with a nomadic sensibility that fuses aspects of new developments in both face-to-face learning and the digital realm.
