The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has added Technology Will Save Us’ DIY Gamer Kit to its permanent collection alongside Arduino, Makey Makey, Ototo and the Colour Chaser!

With the DIY Gamer Kit you can build your own handheld games console from scratch, then code and invent your own games. Making, coding, inventing and playing with the gamer instills skills for the 21st century – like electronics, coding, soldering, problem solving and debugging – in a fun and hands-on way.

“While all five might be small in scale, their significance for contemporary design – and the world at large – knows little bounds,” Paola Antonelli, MoMA’s senior curator of architecture and design, said in a blog on the MoMA website.

“These objects reflect the deep and central role technology and interface design now plays in education, production, and our everyday lives. In their own unique ways they allow audiences – artists, designers, and active maker-culture enthusiasts, pros, children, and amateurs – to engage with the processes and final products that are usually the preserve of electronic engineers.”

“The DIY Gamer Kit, designed by Bethany Koby and Daniel Hirschmann (CEO and Co-Founders of Technology Will Save Us) allows users to flip the paradigm of passive entertainment consumption by building their own handheld console.”

The DIY Gamer Kit was launched in 2013 at the Wired Conference in London, next to the Playstation 4, and has become a much loved DIY Gadget tool and learning vehicle for parents, teachers, after school clubs and makers across the world.

The DIY Gamer Kit is one of eight DIY Gadget Kits that Technology Will Save Us designs and makes. Each one is a vehicle for education that encourages the user to make, play, code and invent with technology. Using everyday life as inspiration, our kits tap in to the hobbies and passions that we all love – music, gardening, cycling and gaming.
