Making Meaning RISD

Matt Monk and Nikki Juen at RISD

October 2, 2014

Founding faculty members Nikki Juen and Matthew Monk delivered a lecture and six-day workshop in the graphic design program at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) early in October this year.

Working with seventy juniors and graduate students in the RISD course ‘Making Meaning’, the lecture and workshop explored ideas around the historic and contemporary uses of spectacle in culture and media. The graduate level course introduces communication theory in relation to ways of analyzing and creating meaning in graphic design. during a rigorous, intensive course, encompassing semiotics, film theory, the dynamics of type and image, denotation, connotation, and visual narrative.

The intensive workshop culminated in an evening performance by the workshop participants for the RISD community.
