Process: Addison Landers

August 8, 2015

Taking cues from Louis Sullivan, VCFA student Addison Landers has taken a sharp veer in his studies in pursuit of the beauty of the analog, exploring hand lettering and book making. In Addison’s words:

The practice of calligraphy and binding books was not intentional and where it will lead, I am unsure. To me, these mediums have been about the use of my hands, turning away from digital production and meditation. In using my hands I am learning to understand the physical construction of both letterforms and physical objects. By putting aside the computer I have opened my mind to new channels of thought, instead of relying on past habits.

The repetitive and slow process of hand binding books and drawing letters has brought forth mindfulness in my making. The craft of my books and calligraphy may be in its infancy but the benefits of understanding construction, opening new channels of thought and paying attention to those thoughts has already began to make an impact on the way in which I work.
